                    SMS PTSA Meeting
                    January 11, 2012
                    SMS

                    Present:  Tina Townsend, Chantal Leblanc, Lulu Jaimes, Sarah Burns and Kendy Sasaki-Ross

                    Old Business:

                    1.     Teacher Conference luncheon;
                    -luncheon went well with many PTSA members volunteering to bring food items.  SMS staff were very appreciative.

                    2.     Emergency Preparedness Equipment:
                    -Chantal and Lulu took an inventory of the current supplies in the shed outside.  A list was made and given to the school.
                    -Mr. Newell/Ms. Kern will get back to the PTSA regarding what is currently needed, and may be purchased by the PTSA.

                    New Business:

                    1.            Treasurer’s Report (Chantal):
                    -Chantal presented the budget as of January 11, 2012. (Please see with Secretary’s binder/ records.)
                    -the SMS PTSA currently has $22,320 in the bank
                    -all were in favor of accepting the current budget

                    2.            Grants:
                    -there were 5 grant applications made by SMS staff/teachers.
                    -the PTSA board went over each grant and discussed the applications. 
                    -Following are a brief description of the applications and approximate costs:

                              *Mr. Burford-8th Grade
                                -40 “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” books
                                -$550
                              *Ms. Logan and Ms. Wintermyer-8th Grade
                      -“Through the Eyes of a Friend” Anne Frank and the       Holocaust-theatre production.
                                -$500
                              *Ms. Brogden-7th Grade
                      -Additional 145 student licenses for IXL math program
                              -$962
                    *Ms. Fowler and 6th Grade Team
                       -field trip to Pacific Science Center for King Tut exhibit in June/12.
                       -$1000 for 3 buses
                     *Ms. Appleby-Special Education
                       -updated software for teaching
                       -$200
                    *Ms. Wilson-Special Education
                      -5 bean bag chairs for classroom
                      -$300
                    After reading and discussing the applications, a decision was made to fund all 5 grant applications.

                    Sarah will notify the teachers, and arrangements will be made asap so that all can be purchased.

                    3.            February event:

                    -the board had a discussion about the tentative date for a dance on February 10th.

                    -a decision was made to fore go the dance, and treat all the students to a small Valentine’s surprise on the 14th.  More to come…
