May is here, and the trees are out in full bloom. As of May 1st, there were 28 1/2 more days left of school.
We are in the home stretch, but still continuing to meet and plan for next year on your behalf.
Thank you to Mr. Belcher for coming to speak on April 13th at SMS. If you would like to see his power point presentation, please email us at smsptsa@rocketmail.com and we can send it to you. (I will continue figuring out how to put it on the website in the mean time. Sorry!)
May 4th/12-Your PTSA will be providing a Taco Buffet to the staff at SMS in appreciation for their hard work this year.
May 8th/12-Annual General Meeting. 9am in the Commons area. We will be electing the Executive Board for next year and reviewing the budget. All Executive Board members will be returning with the exception of Tina Townsend. She will be moving into the High School World. Thank you Tina for all your hard work and dedication. There is still one more position to be filled. Please consider volunteering for the upcoming year.
May 21st/12- free showing of "Race to Nowhere" and last general meeting for Snoqualmie Valley PTSA Council. 6:30 at Mt Si High School Auditorium.
Council’s last general meeting of the year will be short – about 15-20 minutes to pass next year's budget and award Golden Acorns – and will be followed by a screening of Race to Nowhere, an award-winning documentary film that highlights the unintended consequences of our pressure-cooker culture and educational system (see below for a short synopsis).
Thanks to the generosity of many of our local units, Council is able to offer the filming of Race to Nowhere (PG-13) to our community for free. Order your ticket(s) NOW to ensure a seat for this thought-promoting documentary!
Synopsis of RACE TO NOWHERE A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America’s schools. It appears to be destroying our children’s love of learning and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy students.
This remarkable new film shines a light on the price our kids pay for this “race to nowhere.” Cheating is commonplace, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and ironically, young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink and educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills needed for the global economy, RACE TO NOWHERE points to the silent epidemic running rampant in our schools.
RACE TO NOWHERE is a call to families, educators, experts and policy makers to examine current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens in the 21st century.
Looking forward to seeing you at any one of these events!
Thanks again to every one of you who have volunteered at the school, making popcorn, the dance, book fair, pledge drive etc...
